Whitening basics
Whitening toothpaste vs a whitening treatment
A toothpaste labelled “whitening” is not necessarily offering the same result as a bleaching treatment. Start by reading what the label actually promises.

Look for the purpose of the product
Whitening toothpastes can help remove surface stains through polishing or other ingredients. That is different from changing the underlying colour through bleaching. Fluoride toothpaste also has a role in cavity prevention, separate from a cosmetic claim.
Compare the directions, not just the packaging
Check who the product is intended for, how it should be used and whether it suits any advice you have already received. Keep a photograph of the ingredient list if you want to discuss it with your dentist. An expensive box is not a substitute for clear information.
Avoid making several changes together
If you are planning a whitening appointment, explain your current routine first. Ask which everyday products to continue and whether anything should be paused. Changing toothpaste, adding strips and booking treatment simultaneously can make it difficult to describe what you have used.
Choose the goal before the product
If your aim is daily cleaning, ask about an appropriate everyday routine. If you want to explore a cosmetic change, discuss whitening suitability and expectations. Our guide to reading whitening product labels provides a practical checklist.
