Everyday care
Does brushing harder make teeth whiter?
Visible staining can tempt you to scrub harder. A better response is to understand the cause and review your technique, rather than increasing force.

Gentle cleaning is the aim
The American Dental Association recommends a soft brush and gentle strokes. Clean the inner, outer and chewing surfaces rather than repeatedly scrubbing only the visible front teeth. Brushing harder is not a bleaching treatment.
Notice what your brush tells you
If the head becomes misshapen quickly, mention it when asking about technique. Do not use the worn bristles as proof of thorough cleaning. A dental professional can watch how you brush and show you a more suitable movement.
Use features thoughtfully
If your powered brush has a pressure indicator, read what it means and how to respond. Do not treat a timer as the only measure of a good routine. Reach, technique and following individual instructions still matter.
Ask about stains separately
Bring up the colour you want to change at a dental review rather than trying to scrub it away. Our staining article explains why surface appearance can have different causes. A clearer explanation helps you choose between ordinary care and a cosmetic consultation.
